Design Challenge

  1. Lack of specific technology details: Overcoming the challenge of working with confidential information provided by engineers regarding the utilization of the technology in the project.

  2. Research and design: Conducted extensive research and designed multiple form factors for the USB dongles, presenting physical prototypes to project managers for evaluation and feedback.

  3. Portability and convenience: Addressing the need for a wearable or clip-on solution for Cisco technicians to carry the device while on the go, while also ensuring ease of storage and management due to the small size of the device, minimizing the risk of loss.


Contribution

  1. Wire clip solution: Developed a design concept for a wire clip that allows the device to be securely attached to a pocket, providing a convenient carrying option for technicians.

  2. Magnetic mounting solution: Devised a solution to incorporate magnets into the device, enabling it to be easily mounted onto any metal surface such as an IT system rack or inside a metal drawer, ensuring easy accessibility and minimizing the risk of misplacement.

  3. Touch-sensitive On/Off switch: Proposed and implemented a touch-sensitive On/Off switch to activate the device's connection, eliminating the need for a physical button. This solution maintained affordability while enhancing user experience and ease of operation.


Achievements

  • Pioneering Bluetooth control module: Developed the first Bluetooth control module or dongle specifically designed for Cisco's flagship product, the Catalyst series. This innovative solution provided Cisco technicians with a wireless and convenient method to access and control Catalyst switches.

  • Positive reception from engineers and project managers: Received enthusiastic feedback from engineers and project managers who were impressed by the module's elegant and streamlined design. The success of this project led to increased recognition and trust in the Central Engineer Department, resulting in additional project opportunities from the UABU teams.

Crafted with meticulous attention to detail, the soft rounded rectangular form factor of the device was meticulously designed using advanced techniques such as splines and 3D surface modeling, resulting in a visually striking aesthetic that exudes a sense of sleekness and speed.
