Design Challenge

  1. The challenge was to create a new character and incorporate it into a new case while refreshing the existing Mermaid toy.

  2. The outdated Mermaid toy needed an update, including a modernized character face and alignment with the rest of the new toy lineups.

  3. It was crucial to address potential issues such as mold and mildew, paint chipping, and poor swim function reported with the Mermaid SKU.

  4. The goal was to improve both the look and function of the toy through mechanical enhancements.

Contribution

  1. Conducted extensive research on bath toy trends and advancements to identify innovative concepts for Munchkin.

  2. Enhanced the style and functionality of Munchkin's bath toy line by collaborating with designers, engineers, and marketers.

  3. Mentored and coached design interns throughout the product development process, from ideation to prototyping and refining 3D designs.

  4. Infused the new bath toy concept with innovative features, leveraging the interns' expertise and fresh perspectives.

  5. Resulted in a range of updated bath toys that met high quality and safety standards while captivating children's imagination and offering enhanced play experiences.

  6. Demonstrated Munchkin's commitment to continuous improvement and solidified the brand's leadership in the baby product industry.

FORM

Designed with a vibrant and contemporary character, featuring playful and colorful details that add a touch of excitement.

FUNCTION

Incorporated a pull-on headlamp feature that activates the flapping fins, making it easy for little hands to operate. Designed to engage children in action and reaction play patterns while enhancing their hand-eye coordination skills.

SAFETY

Underwent rigorous testing and evaluation to meet the safety standards set by the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) International. Certified to ensure a safe and secure play experience for children.

SUSTAINABILITY

Implemented an environmentally conscious assembly process, utilizing simple snap-on components and stainless steel screws. This design allows for easy disassembly and promotes recycling by removing a few screws.

QUALITY

Enhanced the overall quality and functionality of the product compared to its predecessor, the Mermaid item. Addressed previous issues with the pull string, ensuring it is less prone to tangling or getting stuck. Collaborated with an engineering team to carefully evaluate and optimize the length of the string and improve the rewind mechanism, resulting in a more reliable and user-friendly design.
