Design Challenge

  • In response to customer feedback and the success of the 59S Mini Sterilizer, Munchkin requested the development of a new device featuring a built-in rechargeable battery.

  • To address customer concerns and enhance usability, the new design incorporates an added window, secondary lighting notification, and clear indication of device functionality.

  • Ensuring the device's effectiveness and safety, particular attention was given to UV-C lighting-related safety precautions, guaranteeing that it functions as intended while maintaining customer safety.

Contribution

  1. Researched various UV-C sanitizer products, expanding scientific knowledge and contributing to Munchkin's UV-C sanitizer lineup before and during the pandemic.

  2. Managed the entire product design process, including project timeline, development, and collaboration with Engineers, Marketing, Costing, Packaging, and PD Management. Led the industrial design process from ideation to sample reviews, encompassing competitor research, material exploration, sketching, prototyping, 3D CAD construction, 3D rendering, design proposals, CMF specification, and more.

  3. Optimized design and functionality by modifying the translucency of the lower plastic housing, eliminating the need for a secondary lighting notification and ensuring simplicity and cost-effectiveness.

  4. Identified a new business opportunity by introducing 59S company to the CEO, resulting in expanded partnerships with major retailers like Walmart, Amazon, Target, and others across the US, Canada, and Europe.

Achievements

  1. 1st version of Mini Sterilizer was a successful product for Munchkin during the pandemic, gaining more than $3M for the company.

  2. Brought trust and highly functional products to Munchkin customers and provided a leveled ground for the brand to expand the product category.

  3. Quickly redesigned and developed the 2nd version of Mini Sterilizer with a built-in rechargeable battery and improved the overall feature for a better User Experience (UX Design).

  4. IDEA Award Featured Honorable Mention on the 1st version of Mini Sterilizer.
