Although the suction cup had undergone previous redevelopment, performance problems remained unresolved. The challenge was to identify the root cause of the suction failure, implement an effective solution, and restore revenue targets for the year.

DEVELOPMENT

QUALITATIVE RESEARCH
There was speculation that suction issues stemmed from customer environments and usage — textured tiles reducing adhesion, improper locking, or in some cases no problems at all — highlighting the need to study both environment and user behavior.

QUANTITATIVE RESEARCH-1
The product had been manufactured by multiple suppliers over the years, resulting in variations across batches. We collected and tested samples from different production runs, measuring performance and recording failure points over time to identify the root causes of the suction issue.

DESIGN A BETTER SUCTION CUP IN SOLIDWORKS
Created detailed 3D models of suction cup concepts directly in SolidWorks, incorporating variations in geometry, wall thickness, and locking features. Parametric modeling allowed efficient adjustments and comparisons across multiple design directions.

DESIGN A BETTER SCOOP & MODERNIZING I
Redesigned the scoop with improved ergonomics, durability, and ease of use, focusing on enhancing both function and style. Updated form language and proportions to align with modern aesthetics while refining details for manufacturing efficiency.

COLLABORATE WITH ENGINEERS
Worked closely with engineering teams to develop CAD models optimized for Design for Manufacturing (DFM). Ensured that design intent was preserved while refining details for tooling feasibility, cost efficiency, and production reliability.

SOFT GOOD DEVELOPMENT & CMF
Replaced the outdated bright blue color with a muted gray to better complement bathroom environments and align with current interior design preferences. Research showed that parents favor subtle, neutral tones that blend seamlessly into the home rather than standing out as visual clutter.

PROTOTYPING
Built functional prototypes using 3D printing and assembled components for internal review. These early models enabled hands-on evaluation of form, fit, and function, allowing quick feedback and design adjustments before moving into tooling.

TESTING & MAKE IMPROVEMENTS

Conducted final testing on EP, FEP, and PP samples at each stage to ensure all quality standards were met. Collaborated with QC and mechanical engineers to document results and secure approval for shipment.
