Although Apps can be effective, some parents do not want to spend time setting up their smartphones in the bathroom and worrying about their kids may drop and damage their phones. ”

PROCESS

The project started in a fuzzy front end phase focused on a core behavioral challenge—helping kids brush their teeth consistently and effectively, which is a well-known but poorly solved problem space.

We began by conducting parent and child interviews, behavioral observations, and benchmarking existing solutions to understand why current products fail in real use. The main issues weren’t just physical design—they were low engagement, short brushing duration, and lack of feedback loops that sustain behavior.

From this research, we synthesized key behavioral drivers around play, reward, and interaction feedback. Rather than moving directly into ideation, we used these insights to define clear design principles that guided the direction of the concepts.

We then translated those principles into a structured concept development process, working through multiple directions and narrowing them using user feedback and feasibility constraints.

The outcome was a toothbrush system that combines oral care with interactive behavioral reinforcement, designed not just as a product, but as a tool to improve brushing habits through engagement and feedback.

The diagram shows different research and ideation activities, with color-coded bubbles representing teams from leadership, R&D, industrial design, and packaging design. The process transitions through unstructured research, final briefs, ideation, prototyping, testing, at the end leading to a product or solution.

PLATFORM DESIGN STRATEGY & EXTENDABILITY

The Firefly Kids Play Action™ toothbrush was developed as a flagship, premium-positioned product within the Firefly brand ecosystem. The core design was intentionally created as a durable, neutral platform rather than a single character execution.

This approach enables the base product architecture to support multiple SKU variations, including gender-specific editions and licensed character integrations, without requiring structural redesign.

Beyond visual customization, the system was designed to accommodate future expansion of sound UX, interactive play patterns, and digital engagement features, allowing the product to evolve with emerging technologies and shifting market expectations.

This establishes a scalable design foundation that can extend across future product generations while maintaining consistency in usability, manufacturing efficiency, and brand experience.
