UV-C MINI STERILIZER PLUS

Kills 99.9% of Germs on Pacifiers in 59 Seconds

Brand: Munchkin
Launch: 2021

“Making the UV-C Mini Sterilizer even better.”

Strategic Challenge: Munchkin needed to defend market share in sterilization category while addressing critical user feedback threatening product viability.

My Leadership Role: Coordinated cross-functional teams across engineering, marketing, and manufacturing to deliver next-generation product under aggressive timeline and cost constraints.

Key Organizational Challenge: Balancing competing stakeholder priorities while maintaining design quality and market positioning.

INSIGHTS
(Based on the Previous-Gen Product)

Open wireless blood glucose monitor showing batteries inside, with a white cover featuring a gray logo beside it on a black surface.

“I THOUGHT THIS PRODUCT WAS RECHARGEABLE”

Consumers misunderstood the first generation product was supposed to be a rechargeable, but it required three AA batteries. Due to this confusion, some consumers left negative reviews online and returned the item.

Four yellow cylindrical batteries arranged in a cross on a dark, weathered wooden surface.

“BATTERIES ARE EXPENSIVE”

Replacement batteries are costly and inconvenient, and there is an unmet need to redesign and improve the product.

“ I CAN’T TELL IF THIS IS ACTUALLY WORKING”

The first gen item had a poor user interface.
Consumers would like a way to “see that the UV lights are on and that sterilization is happening.

& PAIN POINTS

A white portable electronic device with a rounded square shape, labeled with various annotations, on a light purple background. The device has a large B logo on the top, a power button that doesn’t look like a button, a visible micro USB port, and a strap. Annotations indicate the battery cover is hard to open, the product feels slippery, the power button is hard to press, the product has rough visible parting lines, and customers can't tell if it’s working when the power button is pressed.

UVC LIGHT DISTRIBUTION & COVERAGE STUDY

  • Analyzed emission angles and intensity patterns across different UVC LED types to understand coverage distribution within the enclosure.

  • Mapped shadow zones and coverage gaps to inform LED placement and internal geometry, ensuring more consistent exposure across all surfaces.

  • Design decisions were driven by maximizing effective sterilization coverage while maintaining compact form factor and energy efficiency.

DESIGN REFINEMENT THROUGH ENGINEERING COLLABORATION

  • Following initial CAD handoff, worked closely with engineering to simplify internal structure and reduce unnecessary mechanical complexity.

  • Refined form and component integration to achieve a cleaner, more intuitive product expression while improving manufacturability.

  • Adjusted system details including power interface (USB-C to Micro USB), and introduced LED status indicators to clearly communicate power state and failure conditions to the user.

  • These refinements balanced usability, cost, and production constraints while improving overall product clarity and reliability.
